Is dermatitis contagious?

No, most types of dermatitis such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, or eczema are not contagious. However, if the skin inflammation is caused by an infection (e.g., fungi, bacteria, viruses like scabies or herpes), then it can be contagious through close contact or shared personal items.

Should I bathe frequently if I have dermatitis?

Yes. Regular bathing helps remove sweat, dirt, and bacteria from the skin. To protect the skin barrier:

  • Use lukewarm water, not hot.
  • Avoid harsh soaps or strong detergents.
  • Moisturize immediately after bathing, especially for people with atopic dermatitis.
What is eczema? Is it an allergic condition?

Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, presenting as itchy, red, scaly or blistered skin. It can be allergic or non-allergic:

  • Allergic contact eczema: caused by allergens like cosmetics or chemicals.
  • Atopic dermatitis: linked to allergic tendencies or family history.
  • In some cases, the exact cause is unknown.
What causes hair loss?

Hair loss can have multiple causes:

(1) Physiological:

  • Postpartum, hormonal changes
  • Seasonal shedding

(2) Medical:

  • Scalp conditions (e.g., dandruff, fungal infections)
  • Nutritional deficiencies (iron, zinc, vitamin D)
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Stress-induced hair loss (telogen effluvium)
  • Genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)

(3) External factors:

  • Excessive styling, heat, or chemical treatments
  • Certain medications (e.g., chemotherapy, antibiotics)
Are fungal infections contagious?

Yes. Fungal infections (of the skin, scalp, nails) are contagious and can spread through direct skin contact or by sharing items like towels, clothing, shoes, or grooming tools. Certain fungi (e.g., Microsporum species) may also be passed from infected pets. Maintaining good hygiene and starting antifungal treatment early helps prevent further transmission.

Does herpes recur? Can it be completely cured?

Yes, herpes often recur. It is caused by the Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and typically present as painful blisters on the lips or genital area. After the initial outbreak, the virus remains latent in nerve cells and can reactivate during periods of stress, fatigue, or immunosuppression. There is currently no definitive cure, but antiviral medications (e.g., acyclovir, valacyclovir) effectively control outbreaks and reduce recurrence.

How long does it take to treat a fungal infection?

Treatment duration depends on (1) the type of fungal infection, (2) location and severity of the fungal infection, as well as (3) the individual’s response to therapy.

  • Skin fungal infections typically resolve within 2-4 weeks of appropriate topical or oral antifungal treatment.
  • Nail or scalp fungal infections often require 3-6 months (or longer) of continuous therapy.
  • Completing the full prescribed course is essential to prevent recurrence.
How do I know if a mole or skin lesion is concerning?

Look for changes in size, shape, or color; irregular borders; asymmetry; and bleeding or itching. Any new or evolving lesion should be evaluated by a dermatologist promptly.

How can I prepare for my first dermatology appointment?

Bring a list of current medications, note any skincare products you use, and document the onset and progression of concerns. Photographs of intermittent rashes or flares can also be helpful.
